The Amber OTA for Japan (areas near the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant) is currently in force, while there is no OTA for other areas in Japan. Residents who intend to visit the areas near the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant or are already there should exercise caution, attend to personal safety and monitor the situation and the announcements by the Japanese authorities. Residents should avoid all travel to the restricted area identified by the Japanese authorities.

- On 24 August 2023, the Japanese government started the release of the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean.
- In mid-August and early September 2013, there were reports of leakage of radioactive water at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear facility, to which the Japanese regulators classified as an INES (International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale) Level 3 "serious incident".
- On 11 March 2011, north-east Japan was hit by a magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami, causing the meltdown in Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, which was classified as an INES (International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale) Level 7 "major incident".

Registration for Outbound Travel Information (ROTI)
Before departing Hong Kong, residents may register via ROTI their travel itineraries and contact details to receive updates on OTA and related information. The Immigration Department may contact and assist the registrants in an emergency.
